The mining of silica sand involves several carefully sequenced stages to extract and process the mineral for foundry and glass applications. QMDC follows a systematic, technology-driven approach at every step.

From geological planning and controlled blasting through to washing, drying, and precision grading, each stage is governed by strict quality and safety protocols — ensuring consistent purity, grain distribution, and moisture specifications for our customers.

The 8-Stage Process
Step 01
Mine Planning & Controlled Blasting
Detailed mine planning is carried out based on geological studies. Controlled and systematic blasting techniques are adopted to loosen silica-bearing rock while minimising vibration, fly rock, dust, and noise — in strict compliance with safety regulations.
Step 02
Excavation & Material Transportation
Post-blasting, the loosened material is excavated using hydraulic excavators and transported via dumpers to the processing plant. Proper haul road maintenance and speed control reduce dust generation and ensure safe movement.
Step 03
Primary Crushing
The excavated material is fed into primary crushers where large boulders are reduced to smaller sizes suitable for washing and further processing.
Step 04
Washing & Screening
Crushed material is subjected to multi-stage washing and screening to remove clay, silt, and unwanted impurities. This process enhances silica purity and ensures uniform grain size distribution.
Step 05
Attrition Scrubbing & Grading
Attrition scrubbers are used to remove surface impurities and further improve silica content. The sand is then graded into different sizes — AFS 25 through AFS 100 — based on customer and industry requirements.
Step 06
Dewatering & Drying
Dewatering screens and hydrocyclones remove excess moisture. Where required, drying systems — including our 20 TPH rotary dryers — achieve specified moisture levels (≤ 0.30%) for various foundry and glass applications.
Step 07
Quality Assurance & Testing
Continuous quality checks are conducted for chemical composition (SiO₂, LOI, clay content), particle size distribution, and moisture content — ensuring compliance with ISO 9001:2015 and customer-specific standards.
Step 08
Packing & Dispatch
Final silica sand products are packed in HDPE bags, jumbo bags, or supplied in bulk form and dispatched with full documentation and lot traceability to clients including SAIL, BHEL, Texmaco Rail, Titagarh Rail, and others across India.
